A must for anyone interested in the history of America s old time bandits Emmett was a survivor after the gangs last fateful raid at Coffeyville and spent 15 yrs in prison When he came out he starred in some films and lived well into the 20th century. Autobiography of an Old West outlaw Known for his scandalous career as a train and bank robber, Emmett Dalton remains a significant figure in American Old West history This candid autobiography details his years with the Dalton gang, his courtship of Julia Johnson, and the fourteen years he served in prison Peppered with anecdotes, this book provides a peek into the mind of an outlaw A good Dealer and a good book. I was quite interested in this book because the Dalton gang attacked the town in Indian Territory close to my great great grandfather s farm He had gone to town in the buckboard, pulled by a team of mules He had my great grandmother with him She was only six years old at the time When word came over the telegraph that they were headed that way, he told her to hide behind the counter in the General Store When the Dalton s rode into town, there was quite a gun fight One of my g g grandfather s mules was hit with a bullet With treatment, he healed OK So, for that reason, I wanted to read the story from the perspective of one of the Daltons I was not disappointed Emmet was very personal in his writing style and it gave me a new perspective as to why they became outlaws The main reason was because of corporations, including banks and railroads During that period in post civil war history, the railroads were continuously violating individual rights These outlaws were determined to correct that problem The same holds true for the James gang In fact, they were cousins It looks like they never held up individuals, only trains and banks It s a great read if you re interested in that aspect of American history I am and I was not disappointed at all Glad I bought it I ll keep it in my library. This book is written by and from the perspective of the member of that notorious gang of thieves in the Old West That said, the writer was an amateur, which makes the book superficial and rather difficult annoying to read That said, it is a first hand account by one of the gang s members How much is accurate and how much is an attempt at making himslef and the other gang members look better is debatable. Emmett Dalton s retelling of his outlaw career, along with his brothers Gratton and Bob, makes for a crisp and clear saga of the dying west in the 1890s The Dalton gang met its demise in one of the biggest shootouts in American history in Coffeyville, Kansas in 1892 Only Emmett, who was riddled with 20 bullets, survived the gunplay and he then spent 15 years in prison before being released at the age of 36 in 1907 I especially enjoyed Emmett s comments about the urban gangsters of prohibition who had replaced the night marauders of the 19th century I highly recommend this autobiography of an Irish American bad man.
